What Is This Program

A civilization studied where it still lives.

India is the only civilization in the world that has continued without interruption from 5,000 years ago to the present day. Varanasi is the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth. India is home to four independent world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. For students of history, philosophy, and religious studies, this is the most extraordinary classroom on earth.

This 11-day residential academic program is designed for international students and faculty in history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, religious studies, political science, and international relations. It is developed in partnership with the University of Delhi.

This is not a heritage tour. It is a structured academic experience: seminars with University of Delhi faculty, archival and site access, and roundtable discussions on philosophy, history, and the living religious traditions of India.

Participation is by application only. Each cohort is limited to 20 participants, selected through a review of academic background and statement of purpose.

Why India for Civilizational Studies

The world's oldest continuous civilization.

Unbroken Continuity

Unlike the civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, or Greece, India's intellectual and religious traditions have remained continuously alive. Texts written millennia ago are still studied, debated, and practiced today, not as artifacts, but as living thought.

Philosophical Depth

Indian philosophy, Vedanta, Buddhist logic, Jain epistemology, has directly influenced global intellectual history. Studying it at the source, with scholars who work within these traditions, offers depth unavailable elsewhere.

Sacred Geography

From the Mughal monuments of Agra to the ghats of Varanasi where pilgrims have gathered for three thousand years, India's sacred landscape is not a museum. It is a living text that can only be read in place.

Program Structure

Eleven days. Four cities. A civilization, read in place.

The program moves from the academic foundation of Delhi through the Mughal heritage of Agra and the cultural depth of Lucknow, closing in Varanasi, the spiritual heart of the subcontinent.
